About this place
During the Great War, Poperinge was located behind the front lines and around 250,000 soldiers stayed in and around the town. Many British soldiers came here regularly to relax. They did so at Talbot House, a soldiers' club or'Every Man's Club'where rank and status did not matter. No soldiers or officers, just people who wanted to escape reality for a while. Talbot House had a canteen, a piano, a billiard table, a library, a writing room, an attic chapel, and a lovely garden. Soon the mansion became too small, so the adjacent hop warehouse was transformed into a concert hall. Pluralism, tolerance, and mutual respect were the core values of the house, and Talbot House became a household name.
Today, you can still enjoy a cup of tea with a dash of milk in the protected building, relax in the garden, and stay overnight. Just like during World War I. Don't expect four-star grandeur, but authentic basic comfort. You share a bathroom, but who cares, you're staying in a memorable piece of historical heritage. Each room has its own history and is named after a historical figure. The concert hall of yesteryear serves as a museum, and the compelling testimonies make an impression. Or how small stories suddenly bring the Great War very close.
